Protecting Your Network: Simple Steps to Keep Your Devices Secure

Jun 25, 2025

Here at Lakeland Networks, we take security very seriously. While we work hard to ensure the reliability and safety of our internet service, it’s equally important for our customers to take steps to protect the devices you use to connect to the internet. Cyber threats like viruses, malware, phishing, and unauthorized access attempts are becoming increasingly common, and taking a few proactive steps can go a long way in keeping your personal information safe.

As part of our ongoing commitment to network security, we recommend that our customers routinely monitor their connected devices for viruses or other malware. Although device security is the responsibility of each customer, we wanted to offer a friendly reminder to take proactive steps for your own protection.

Here are a few important steps we encourage all customers to take regularly:

  • Run full antivirus and malware scans on connected devices.
  • Use strong, unique passwords for all accounts and devices, and update them regularly. Consider using a reputable password manager like Bitwarden, One Password or Lastpass to keep track of them.
  • Keep your devices and software up to date. Install updates and security patches as soon as they’re available to help close vulnerabilities that may be exploited.
  • Review connected devices on your home network and remove any that are unknown or no longer in use. Most routers have a dashboard where you can see what’s connected (see our support document How do I log into my fibre router
  • Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) on any services that support it, especially for email, banking, and cloud storage accounts.
  • Secure your Wi-Fi network with a strong password and encryption (WPA2 or WPA3), and consider changing your network name (SSID) so it doesn’t include personal information (see our support document How do I change my fibre WiFi settings

Taking just a few of these simple precautions can significantly improve the security of your digital life.
