As the month of May approaches and the long weekend holidays near, it is essential to start preparing for the upcoming boating season. At Lakeland, the surrounding lakes are our pride and joy, but safety is always at our core. Please keep in mind the following boating and water safety tips to think of around our beautiful lakes.
Check Your Equipment:
Before getting into your vessel and venturing off into the sunset, inspect your boat (motorized and non-motorized) and all equipment for any signs of damage or wear. Ensure that safety equipment, such as life jackets, flares, flashlights, and fire extinguishers, are in good working condition and readily accessible.
Review Navigation Rules:
Familiarize yourself with navigation rules and regulations specific to Muskoka’s waterways. Pay attention to speed limits, no-wake zones, and other boating restrictions to ensure safe and responsible navigation. At sunset time, make sure you remember to turn your navigation lights on, if you don’t have any please safely return to mainland.
Steer Clear:
During flood season and after the ice thaw, make sure that you steer clear of debris floating at the surface of the water. The water levels may vary from what you are used to during flood season and drought. This means that rocks may be hiding from your vision. Pay close attention to water levels before you go out, as well as navigation markers.
File a Float Plan:
Before setting out on the water, let someone know your intended route and estimated time of return. This information can be crucial in case of an emergency and will help rescuers locate you quickly if needed.
Avoid Alcohol:
Alcohol and boating don’t mix. Save the celebrations for after you’ve safely returned to shore, and always designate a sober operator if alcohol is consumed. Remember, water on the water, beer on the pier!
As we embrace the beauty of spring and summer time in Muskoka, Parry Sound, and Almaguin, and eagerly anticipate the summer boating season, let’s prioritize safety above all else. By staying vigilant, following essential water safety guidelines, and preparing for the upcoming boating season, we can ensure that everyone enjoys a safe and enjoyable experience on the water. Whether you’re soaking up the sun on the shire or cruising the lake on the boat, let’s make water safety a top priority this spring and beyond.
